Best Practices

Here are some scenarios of best practices when you encounter some issues when applying Provence Natural Paints. This should help you solve those issues or help you avoid them.

Dry or Cold Joint

❌ Causes:
Limewash was not painted edge to edge, Limewash was allowed to dry on wall before entire wall was completed. This line was the “joint” mark
✅ Corrective Measures:
Painting should be done from end to end, in complete sections. Consider adding more painters to prevent limewash paint from premature drying prior to completion

Very distinctive brush lines

❌ Causes:
The Third coat of Limewash was Burnished using a Wet or Damp Brush INSTEAD of a DRY BRUSH
✅ Corrective Measures:
Apply Third Coat using a Dry Brush

Raw unfinished look

❌ Causes:
The Third coat of Limewash was not Burnished
✅ Corrective Measures:
Third coat of freshly applied Limewash must be followed by Burnishing using a Dry Brush

Blotchy marks on the surface

❌ Causes:
This is caused by excess sealer on the surface
✅ Corrective Measures:
Provence sealers are water based penetrating sealers. Sealers applied will penetrate the Limewash paint. Any excess sealers which did not penetrate a few minutes after application should be removed

Powdery white marks on the surface

❌ Causes:
Insufficient air when curing of Provence
✅ Corrective Measures:
Area should be well ventilated while Provence is curing.

After Provence has cured, lightly mist with water to assist in curing. Mist twice in 2-3 hour intervals, allow to dry overnight before applying sealer.

While the application of Provence is quite easy, the proper preparation of the Wall is important to the success of Provence and of any other paint finishes. It should be reminded that all preparations are standard to the construction industry, and to follow instructions of the brands/materials used.

Most of the problems encountered in Projects has to do with Shortcuts and Improper Curing time – which prevents other materials from drying properly and such improper practices often shows up when Provence has already been applied.

The Proper Use of Mesh Tapes, Patching Compounds, Skimcoats and Primers are repeated here, and to discourage shortcuts and encourage proper construction process procedures.

Reminders

  1. On Wall areas which will be applied with Provence, all electrical conduits, fixtures, water lines and other areas on which the relocation /addition and/or subtraction) can and will damage the walls should be done first, and all patching works should be completed before applying Primer.

*The relocation and re-patching of walls will tend to push completion schedules into unrealistic expectations and will lead to shortcuts which will lead to future problems.

  2. (For Drywalls/ Areas where Drywall meets Concrete) When using Drywalls, Gaps should be “bridged” with Mesh tape and applied with filler /all purpose epoxy / industrial adhesives to minimize movements and vibration between boards. Nail and/or screw boards on edges to the back frame in sufficient quantities to minimize movements and vibrations between boards.

*This is to prevent significant movements and vibrations which will lead to cracking.

  3. The Use of Patching Compounds/ Skimcoats, to correct surface irregularities will tend to create “bulges”. This should be sanded to level or feather out to the whole area.

*This is to prevent “Bulging areas” which lead Provence to be applied unevenly.

  4. Remove powdery residues from sanded Patching Compounds/ Skimcoats before applying Primers.

*Powdery residues will prevent Primers from bonding properly to the wall.

  5. Allow any patching compounds and/or skimcoats to cure and dry thoroughly overnight or more – (if patching is thick) before applying Primer over surface area.

*Patching Compounds and/or Skimcoats which are insuficiently cured will lead to Provence showing up in “Patches” as more paint are absorbed Into these areas.

  6. Allow the first coat of Primer to dry overnight and apply a second coat of Primer and allow to dry overnight before applying Provence

*Primers which are insufficiently cured will lead to Provence showing up in “Patches” as more paint are absorbed into these areas.
